Work description:
A painting that explores human and alien sex through mark making in movements and psychical gestures, layering. In this work, figurative/forms of beings comes from images that I worked together with AI with me using text, asking them to create images of human/alien sex/touch; I created a small image library of those outcomes and then I used them as references in the sketch/painting. (eg. Penis shaped worms swimming some creature’s sleeve; floating creature/body parts/ hands(ish) holding tight with flesh around). By alternating between abstraction and figurative forms, this work develops a layered world that combines aspects of human and aliens interaction and touch. Working with bodily gestures such as stabbing and scratching, I seek to capture the translation of physical sensations onto canvas. Witchcraft materials such as wax, sand, soil, and egg infuse the creative process with rituals, enabling the channeling of unknown worlds where aliens exist, transcending gender and species boundaries. This approach creates a half figurative, half abstract environment, symbolising the intricate connections between humans and extraterrestrial beings
artist statement
Tia Yoon’s work explores connections—its attempts and its failures. Through shamanistic experiences of channelling energies, Yoon navigates between transgression and tenderness, via the spectacles of unknown worlds of otherness. By reclaiming the sense of alienation and engaging in fantastical posthuman experiences, Yoon's work resonates with a radical dissociation from conventional human existence. Yoon draws inspiration from ancient mythologies, wherein ethereal beings coexisted with humans, seeking to reawaken the essence of that captivating world. Engaging with notions of identity and resistance against the constraints of biopower, Yoon delves into these ancient fantasy realms, where diverse experiences and alternative lifestyles find solace—a dreamlike panorama that resonates with their hope for the contemporary society. Central to Yoon's work are fictional characters who engage in dialogues with transcendental spirits, employing a range of languages both human and ethereal—be it through rituals, incantations, or working with occult materials as conduits for immersive encounters. In their current artistic exploration, Tia Yoon delves into the realm of invoking spirituality within paintings, focusing on the transformative potential of materiality. By imbuing their artworks with spiritual essence, Yoon aspires to create and inhabit safe spaces, where fragmented narratives find solace and meaning.
